The Internet of Things (IoT) is about interconnecting embedded systems, bringing together two evolving technologies: wireless connectivity and sensors. These connected embedded systems are independent microcontroller-based computers that use sensors to collect data. They are networked together usually by a wireless protocol such as WiFi, Bluetooth LE, or a custom communication system. The networking protocol is selected based on the distribution of nodes and the amount of data to be collected.

This data is then sent over the network to the main hub or computer, which collects and analyzes the data, likely storing it locally or remotely, and potentially making system decisions based on the results of the analysis.

Combined with recent advances in low power microcontrollers and energy harvesters such as microGen’s vibrational energy harvester, these new “things” can be self-sustaining.  They are being connected to the internet easily and inexpensively, thus ushering in a second industrial revolution.

Since the output from energy harvesting devices is usually small and intermittent, a system must be carefully designed since it may include appropriate conditioning circuitry to provide stable power to a microcontroller, sensors, a charge controller for a rechargeable battery, a wireless connectivity module, and/or possibly other loads.

The closer an energy harvesting device can come to supplying the overall demands of an embedded system, the closer that system can come to being battery free.

The resulting solution provides an ultra-low power, virtually sustainable sensor that can be deployed to help companies effectively manage and predict potential failures associated with high value assets and machinery – in virtually any environment.

Predictive maintenance is enabled through monitoring and providing data and analytics that can help predict future equipment failure. The application of wireless, ultra-low power sensors can monitor equipment and look for potential wear, errors.  Information from these sensors drives analytics for predictive maintenance.
